In DC, it's commonplace to say we're supposed to like Wale. But we're not really obliged persay - Wale is fuckin' legit. Truth be told, it's not unique to argue how many rappers are obsessed with image and fame, cause KRS-One makes many a paycheck off that (Jimmy would happily concur). But Wale does so in humble fashion, not presenting himself as a messiah or a martyr - he's a modest, modern man. And very proud of representing his metropolitan area. His new album Attention Deficit is a curious sampling of the artist - not as razor-sharp as his Mixtape About Nothing, but brimming with single-worthy tracks like his earlier 100 Miles & Running. Chillin', featuring the M.I.A.-esque chorus of Lady GaGa, has made its way around, but like I said before - it's a modest example of Wale's work.
Mirrors is produced by Mark Ronson, and thumps to the heavy bass groove like a Curtis Mayfield track. Lyrics shine: "My mirrors never lie, so they keep eyes up on they reruns / For fear of what you show them, reality is golden", but really hits the mark with "What the fans can't see, the mirror gon' notice back". Give the candid act credit: Wale proves himself stronger on a first album than any half-assed diss tracks on the market today. And Bun B's verse hardly deviates from the funky spirit of the track. -- PC
