John Mayer's new album Battle Studies comes out today, and it's a mature change of pace for the guitarist/man-slut. One would have assumed that he would have continued with more of the blues-oriented work from Continuum, but considering there's a new starlet he's hooking up with every week, a couple songs about love and relationships would be nice. Cause of course, John Mayer never writes about love or relationships, right? (Get it? I'm being sarcastic!)
But seriously. Heartbreak Warfare is a respectable second single from the new cut, prefaced with a symphony in practicing mode - as this may be his radio-ready heartache-induced masterpiece since Dreaming with a Broken Heart. The keyboards give the session a nice spacey sound, as he lays down some of his darker lyrics: 'Red wine and Ambien / You're talking shit again'. I don't care who he's singing about, because it soars sonically despite setting itself apart from further experimentation on the rest of the album. -- PC
