When I first listened to El Perro del Mar - about a month ago - I couldn't help noticing the similarities between vocalist Sarah Assbring and fellow Swede Lykke Li. But of course, there are all those whole artistic liberties that El Perro takes when projecting her image. Like the cover to her recent effort, Love is Not Pop, with Assbring dressed like cross between a sullen clog-wearing Annie Lennox and Twiggy. But enough of these damn references!
The artsy-fartsy crowd call her sound 'twee pop', described as "revolt into childhood" according the Internets. 'Twee' is the sound my rubber duckie makes. El Perro del Mar has a rich, layered, ambient sound. Not quite as breathy as Frou Frou, and not as wishy-washy as Zero 7. Change of Heart is soft, sexy, and goes down like a cup of warm tea. Followed by a post-coital cigarette. -- PC
