Norah Jones has come out of left field with her new sound, like it was Cyndi Lauper's new hair color or Paris Hilton's new lap dog. She's dropped a lot of her jazz influences that she found her fame within, evidenced by some folks who still can't get 'Don't Know Why' out of their heads after hearing it in their dentist's office.
Chasing Pirates, from her fourth album The Fall, is a great first listen. Its lo-fi piano-cum-drum beat and the lilting vocals emanate the indie cuteness that she's come to embrace (which Rivers Cuomo has quickly dumped). The scant lyrics revolve around pirate metaphors (YARR), and her own romantic sensibilities - but it's still a nice touch for an album that features tracks co-written with Ryan Adams ('Light as a Feather') and Okkervil River's Will Sheff ('Stuck'). Makes me want to don a hook and a parrot and start sailing the seas of the BQE. -- PC
